Climb to England's third-highest peak (950 m) via the scenic and direct Thirlmere approach from Swirls Car Park, avoiding the exposed ridges for a more accessible ascent.The path follows Helvellyn Gill through woodland and open fellside, climbing steadily on engineered stone steps and tracks with views over Thirlmere reservoir and the surrounding fells. It continues up the western flank to the broad summit plateau, where you reach the trig point and cross-shaped shelter for incredible panoramic views across the Lake District – including Ullswater, Thirlmere, distant lakes, ridges, and valleys on a clear day. Descent follows the same path back to the car park.This rewarding route delivers breathtaking mountain scenery and a true Lake District experience without the need for scrambling.
